Natural environment with enormous biological wealth, dense and lush vegetation, streams and ponds are an attraction that invites to enjoy the bounties of nature.
It was enacted with a mission to protect and ensure the water of a number of rivers, including: Lagartijo, Taguaza and Taguacita Cuira, by its northern slope and dam Guanapito, which stores water for irrigation for the area of Altagracia de Orituco llanera shed. A forest that had been partly used to take coffee and cacao plantations, at the expense of the rainforest, eventually had to rename the vocation to safeguard these important water-producing basins.
Guatopo is an important biodiversity refuge. Evergreen montane forests, of great height and density, predominate in the Park, into the lower areas there are rainforests submontane semideciduous seasonal, and the mountain peaks forest cloud formations. The fauna has numerous threatened species such as the jaguar or American Tiger, tapir or tapir, the Harpy Eagle and the spider monkey of North.
Several endemic species of the Cordillera de la Costa are found within the Park, including a small Palm known as dwarf palms, the frog Colostethus guatopensis, and birds like the billed Toucanet, chested Hummingbird, the Venezuelan Bristly Venus Flytrap, the Bristly Yellow-bellied flycatchers and the handsome fruiteater. A new species of spider, called Schizomus yolandae, only been reported in Guatopo.
Tourist attraction and recreation
The place has an information centre called La Macanilla, and three recreational areas called Agua Blanca, Santa Crucita and Quebrada Guatopo. An ancient mill which has been restored, is located in the first so that visitors can observe how in the past sugarcane is processed.
Santa Crucita, located near a Lake, has the necessary infrastructure for who wish to camp and provides information on the biotic resources of the Park. For its part, the third area consists of a spa built on the quebrada Guatopo.
In the South-East sector of the park there is a former coffee plantation, La Elvira, which constitutes an architectural treasure of the 19th century.
